The IP is a specific IP address assigned for some brands of routers for manufacturing settings of their devices. This IP address specifically gives access to user onto the internal settings of the router or modem.

Some of the brands that utilize include:

  • Westell DSL Modems (US ONLY)
  • Some Linksys Routers/Modems
  • 3Com Routers/Modems
  • Billion Routers/Modems
  • Netopia / Cayman Gateways

This private IP address, just like the well known, is used in most networks and small business because an ISP typically assigns a unique IP address to a location. If more than one device you need to connect to the Internet, NAT (Network Address Translation) gateway is used to connect to the Internet. Officially belongs to Class C IP classification. according to the IANA RFC 1918 definitions.

Before attempting to configure your router you should find out what is the IP address, each OS has their own way to do it:

Default User Name and Password

For routers which use as a default address the most common default user name and passwords are admin/ and admin/admin.

For Netopia routers admin/admin or admin/1234 should be used for default user and password.
